What is Registry Tweaker?

Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor

Dell’s lineup of flat panel displays have proven themselves to be reliable, stylish, and typically right on par price-wise with some of the most inexpensive LCD monitors on the market. They’ve delivered exceptional bang for the buck, and throughout the years, they’ve managed to improve the quality of the screens and the overall feature sets while overall prices have gone down. While this is also true for the rest of the monitor industry, Dell has retained their reputation for reliability, which still sticks with them today. Sure, Dell displays don’t have the raw sexiness of Apple’s Cinema series displays, but they’re typically quite a bit cheaper while offering more functionality.

As their popularity has risen, Dell has split their display models into a high-end/low-end schema for each monitor size. Typically, at each size (17" / 19" / 20" / 22" / 24" / 27" / 30"), Dell has a monitor which is a bare-bones model with just the screen and basic connectivity features, along with a high-end model with integrated USB hubs, memory card readers, multiple inputs for picture-in-picture, and in most cases, higher quality LCD panels. Dell charges a significant price premium for their high-end models (price comparison here), but in most cases, the additional cost ends up being worth it in our opinion.

Samsung SyncMaster 2463UW 24in LCD

I love the big screen monitors. After I went from a 19" CRT to a 22" LCD I couldn't go back - anything else left a sour taste in my mouth. Today we are looking at a Samsung SyncMaster 2463uw 24" LCD. When I got this opportunity I was excited, 24" is the sweet spot for monitors nowadays, I wouldn't go higher, anything above a 24" is borderline on becoming a TV and that is for watching movies on. The SyncMaster 2463uw has quite an impressive list of specifications and features, from a nice full 1920x1200 resolution and a 20000:1 contrast ratio to a built in microphone and web cam, this monitor is loaded with everything.

AMD Kills Off Quad FX

Quad FX is one of those technologies that you expect never to get off the ground, so hearing that AMD has pulled support isn't really that much of a surprise to me. Ok, so pulled is a bit of an overstatement, existing owners will still get AMD's backing, but for the immediate future no successor is going to be worked on. If you want a dual CPU solution, without using a server motherboard, you'll have to wait for Intel's Skulltrail next year.

Of course back in January when Quad FX launched, AMD didn't have a quad core solution and this was the closest it could get to rivalling Intel chips like the QX6700; not without a sense of irony given AMD's continuous harping on about ‘native quad core' solutions. Speaking to The Tech Report, AMD's Suzy Pritt explained the situation: ‘The short answer is that while there are still engineering resources focused on future platform offerings that build off Quad FX, the current energy and effort has gone into programs and product initiatives like "Spider" and AMD has discontinued future planning and development of its eight-core enthusiast platform at this time'

Now that AMD does have its quad core processor out the door, the need for Quad FX has rather expired. Quad core systems are hardly being taxed by current software and Phenom isn't exactly impressing some of us so focusing resources on to areas like Spider is definitely a better use of AMD's time and money. However, given Intel is still selling the CPUs we'd recommend people buy, it does seem a litle strange that the company isn't still pushing the enthusiast sector more.

AMD Phenom X3 8750 Triple-Core Processor

AMD launched three new 50-series Phenom X3 triple-core processors, these will range in speeds from 2.1GHz to 2.4GHs. The new 50-series Phenom X3 processors are also free of the TLB erratum that was present in the previous revision of the silicon as are all of the Phenom processors in the XX50 series.

The new Phenom X3 processors can be found priced between $145 and $195 depending on the particular model purchased. The three models being released are the 8450 (2.1GHz, $145), 8650 (2.3GHz, $165), and the 8750 (2.4GHz, $195). Since the new Phenom X3’s will be priced below the X4 lineup and has a max TDP of 95W, they are a good compliment to the new AMD 780G platform.
